Who knew a Designated Player Striker could not only start a game, not only register an assist, but start, get an assist, and score a goal! Gustavo Bou’s return to the starting lineup last week carried over to Saturday, and La Pantera sent a reminder to everyone that there are plenty of talented Argentines in MLS.

New England vs. Inter Miami, Match 17: Three points again, finally!
So it’s really funny, I had to work Saturday night so I missed almost the entire game live and instead followed via (hashtag)NERevs. I kid you not, I finally got the game on and witnessed this Farrell masterclass within the first 30 seconds. Soccer gods punish me for not watching!
But three points is three points, and with three goals scored before the penalty was given—I laughed when it happened because it was so absurd to witness—the Revs put a halt to a league winless streak that started back on May 13 against this hapless Inter Miami side.

Went and hung out with my kid at an asparagus festival in Hadley. No, I’m dead serious. There’s really a festival held specifically to celebrate asparagus. It was actually pretty fun. Since you’re asking, I had pierogis with asparagus in them and deep fried asparagus with this aioli dipping sauce that was pretty good. I’d suggest going next year if you are in the Western Massachusetts area. But in an effort to remain consistent, I have thoughts about the result without seeing the game.

Um, what just happened? I had the emotions that all three of these guys are showing in this one moment, throughout the entirety of the match (and that guy in the blue recycled jersey will get his moment too) after a perplexing 3-3 draw with Atlanta United.
- First guy on left: The empty stare you give when thinking about how the Revs can no longer defend
- Middle guy: The soul-crushing realization that instead of watching your DPs connect in intricate and decisive ways, one can’t get off the bench instead of Jozy. Fucking. Altidore.
- Guy on right: Where was the tactical change to try and create any foothold in the game!?
- Bonus: Carles Gil when he scored the equalizer and got to do the “quiet down” celebration
New England vs. Chicago Fire, Game 14: Mess around and you’ll end up burnt
Two things can be simultaneously true from last night: The boys did great to find their mettle not once, but twice to bring this game level—and they shouldn’t have put themselves in both of those situations to begin with. As much as this was a point gained back from a losing position, it also felt like two points tossed away against a bottom-feeding Chicago Fire team. It’s clear that the Revs are battling injuries and that a fully firing squad is going to be a problem, but there’s also an issue with a lack of desire at the start of games from the team recently, and it burned us once again.

Erm, excuse me, what in the actual fuck??? I thought we were good this year!? OK so I think the Revs still are but this has NOT been a fun stretch of games lately. Knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup and licking the wounds from an unnecessary loss to Miami, a trip to Subaru Park to face the Union was JUST what we needed. Only, everything was going fine—until it wasn’t. A 3-0 loss and several injuries later, this was about as shitty a trip to Philadelphia as imaginable.

A loss to Inter Miami was never going to be easy to stomach, but last night’s 2-1 defeat left a particularly sour taste in this writer’s mouth because so much of this game was out of the Revs’ control, and instead was left to odd, erratic twists of fate. Without even getting into the officiating and how VAR was implemented, a lot of this game can be summed up by saying Miami put one rocket, off-target shot into the box 7 minutes in, and it caromed off Dave Romney and into the net. In the second half, the Revs pinged two balls off of Dixon Arroyo (at least I think it was him both times) inside his own six and the ball ricocheted away from the net. Sometimes, them’s just the breaks.

Slightly late but I can do what I want here. Needed some time to digest the brutalness of that 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in “We *don’t* want the Cup!” play. Won’t take long with this one but there are some takeaways.

The makeup of this game screamed “trap game” from the start, but credit where credit is due: New England was having no part in being tripped up. On the road for the first time in what feels like forever, the Revs got luck to be on their side in the first half, then rode a stellar defensive performance home for the three points. Being in first place feels GREAT.

Depending on how you want to look at it, the Revs either earned a valuable point last night, let two valuable ones slip away, or emerged with a result worthy of the match—that’s the kind of night it was. Had a lot of similarities to the Columbus game—funny, considering it was another Ohio opponent. But with Atlanta dropping points after getting thumped by Nashville, New England remains on top of the conference for another week.
