Um, what just happened? I had the emotions that all three of these guys are showing in this one moment, throughout the entirety of the match (and that guy in the blue recycled jersey will get his moment too) after a perplexing 3-3 draw with Atlanta United.
- First guy on left: The empty stare you give when thinking about how the Revs can no longer defend
- Middle guy: The soul-crushing realization that instead of watching your DPs connect in intricate and decisive ways, one can’t get off the bench instead of Jozy. Fucking. Altidore.
- Guy on right: Where was the tactical change to try and create any foothold in the game!?
- Bonus: Carles Gil when he scored the equalizer and got to do the “quiet down” celebration
Matchday 15 brought about the same result as last time out, albeit this time the Revs went 2-0 up instead of 0-2 down. And also instead of being able to claw back into the game and assert some semblance of dominance, the Revs (7-3-5, 26 points) got utterly dominated Wednesday night.
Yeah this one wasn’t fun to watch. Well, it was if you can find enjoyment in players doing amazing things, even if they’re against your side. That Atlanta attacking unit is something else and having two attacking fullbacks (come back, Brandon…) to go with that creativity meant New England had its hands full from the start. This game isn’t worth a lot of thoughts it’s best worth forgetting about—but at least we got a point.
- Carles Gil is great because he does something with nothing. One bad pass 21 seconds in (2nd fastest in team history), and then one fortuitous bounce in 90+3′ is all it took for the man to do his thing. Just gotta smile. Also have to smile because otherwise I would have pointed out he did nothing to help Matt Polster after Thiago Almada fucking massacred him.
- Bruce got it all wrong and he’s lucky the team—Carles and Ema—bailed him out. Then, to make matters worse, the subs brought nothing to the table and probably served as a bigger hindrance than anything probably. It’s not worth harping on the names we all know could come here. Except I can’t help but point out that when everyone else on the pitch is full-on sprinting, Omar Gonzalez is having a stroll in the park. How many times was he caught out in this game and then just waltzed back despite whatever other pace was being displayed.
- Said it before, will say it again: Depth at fullback has to be a top priority when the window opens. Has to be.
- Why have Giacomo Vrioni if he’s not going to play? After Saturday, what’d he do to deserve not getting minutes tonight? It’s surely gotta be that he starts on Saturday vs. NYCFC, right?
- Taylor Twellman started talking $$ for a potential Djordje Petrovic sale. What is the total going to be? With the way transfers in Europe work, and with Petrovic having potential that’s sky-high, I’m in at juicing some low-table Premier League team out of $20M (16M pounds)—OK let’s get all Colonial and push that figure to just shy of $25M, so it’s 20M pounds.
United/City in the morning, Revs/NYCFC in the afternoon; Saturday is going to be a day. Revs down to 4th in the Eastern Conference after the draw BTW.
Extra Kicks
- NYCFC got smoked by FC Cincinnati on Wednesday, meaning they’ll be more than up for it Saturday in the baseball stadium.
- Philadelphia beats Charlotte, adds more points…
- Cincy/Nashville/Philly/Revs/Atlanta the top five, in order, in the East. Revs currently No. 5 in terms of form and not sure when it’ll get better.
I’m really starting to sour on Bruce with his stupid substitution decisions and constant benching of Vrioni. He’s as much to blame as the rest of the team for the recent lack of points. Not looking forward to Saturday as that crappy field is never favorable to the Revs (and it’s painful to watch any game on that field).
