Remember when dreaming of a quadruple was outlandish—but possible? Seems so long ago now. Then again, January is a long time ago if you think about it. But it’s remarkable how quickly things can change in a season. After that 2-1 win over City, it seemed OK to dream about bringing home all the hardware. We did nick one trophy since, but two other competitions are out of reach, leaving Sunday’s awkward encounter with Brighton.
Awkward firstly because Brighton is a sneaky good team. Wouldn’t mind a few of their players in Red next season if we’re being honest. But also awkward because getting to a Cup Final is always a huge accomplishment, but we’ve struggled with semifinals recently. Ole’s semifinal curse was brutal on everyone to watch, so Ten Hag’s ability to get through the first hurdle for the League Cup felt great. Would—could—the guys recapture the magic again to push onto an FA Cup final?
Turns out they could, but not before playing an additional (and unnecessary) 30 minutes and going to penalty kicks. BUT, considering United’s PK record lately this turned out to be a pleasant Sunday.
It should be reiterated that BHA aren’t some pushovers. This is a team that excelled under Graham Potter and continued an upward trajectory with Roberto De Zerbi. Knowing that, plus how beat up United are at the moment, it’s not surprise this was a thrilling, low-scoring game. Both teams had ample opportunities to find the back of the net, and both Spanish keepers pulled off some impressive saves.
A few thoughts from a half-watch this afternoon:
- We need to sign Alexis MacAllister. United need winners in the team, and he can slot into a variety of our midfield positions. I know that Caciedo is another BHA player linked to United, but give me the World Cup winner first, please and thanks.
- I said a week ago I wasn’t going to get excited by Martial. I’m sticking with that.
- Luke Shaw/Victor Lindelof combo is the defensive pairing I didn’t know I needed. Hope this duo doesn’t have to play together often but it was two personal favorites on the pitch.
- Speaking of Ice Man–what a penalty! I had 0 confidence as he stepped up but was happy to be proven wrong. I know there’s a large section of the fan base that would be OK with him moving on, but as long as Victor is OK being a backup, United should do everything to keep him. How can you not like the man!?
- On the other hand, if Solly March doesn’t sky his penalty, I don’t think Dave saves one today if it went 50 rounds. Just zero confidence he can make a save in PKs to give us a chance. It’s the Dave dilemma: There is arguably no better shot-stopper in the world, but he’s below average at every other aspect of his game. Decisions, decisions this summer…
- Happy for Sancho to score during PKs. I have more thoughts coming on him and it wasn’t a perfect performance, but I’ll never give up hope. If he missed…
- Casemiro has been underwhelming lately. Bound to happen but this midfield needs serious help.
- Wembley Bound again. Never an issue with that. Also United raises it’s game against City I’ll take our chances.
Next up: A Thursday game against Tottenham. With Spurs shipping six goals to Newcastle and a chance to secure the top 4 on the line, fully expect a United stinker.
